Carbondale Full Gym

One of our favorite things about puzzles is that in addition to being an enjoyable solo activity, they also have the ability to create memories and bring people together. This is especially clear every February in the town of Carbondale, Colorado, when the Recreation Department hosts their annual Puzzle and Pie Night Out.

This year’s second annual Puzzle and Pie Night Out was an outstanding success, according to Town of Carbondale Special Events Coordinator Jamie Wall. In the event, teams of 1-4 people register to complete a 500-piece custom jigsaw puzzle as fast as possible, enjoying laughs and pizza along the way. The fastest three teams are awarded prizes, and each team gets to keep their puzzle to commemorate the event. This year’s competition featured 53 total teams with the first-place team finishing their puzzle in just over 55 minutes!

Each year, the puzzle featured in the competition is a photo of something relating to the Town of Carbondale, bringing a sense of familiarity and community to the puzzles used in the event. This year’s image was decided by a photo contest, with the winning photo being from the annual Mountain Fair, taken by Tommy Sands. The photo features the Rhythm of the Heart community drum circle, a tradition that signifies the start of the Mountain Fair.

Jamie was super impressed by this year’s event, which saw participation nearly double from last year. She noted that this event is quickly growing into one of the Recreation Department’s most popular events, alongside the 117-year tradition of Potato Day every September, monthly First Friday events, and the annual Turkey Trot celebrating Thanksgiving. All of these events bring affordable opportunities for people to get out in their community and spend time with those close to them and other members of the community.
